The Diversity Committee's Pipeline Subcommittee and Legal Services for Persons with Disabilities Committee (LSPD) have come together to launch a new three-part CLE series focusing on disabilities-related legal issues.

The first in the series, titled "Long Term Planning for the Special Needs Client," is for those who are interested in best serving clients with special needs - and their families. Joel A. Mendler, estate planning specialist, will be the featured speaker.

Long-Term Planning for the Special Needs Client

Discussion will include:
  • Counseling families on financing long-term care needs, including long-term care insurance and Medicaid eligibility
  • Financial and legal planning options for disabled family members - including special needs trusts designed to preserve eligibility for governmental benefits.


Bio:
Joel A. Mendler first joined the firm of Baldwin & Haspel in 1968 where he was a partner until Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when he relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. He rejoined the firm in 2012. Mr. Mendler is a Board Certified Tax Specialist and Estate Planning and Estate Administration Specialist, as certified by the Louisiana State Board of Legal Specialization. He is admitted to practice in both Louisiana and Alabama.

Mr. Mendler advises and implements estate plans, including drafting wills, trusts and advance directives, handles and reviews estate administrations, counsels families on financing long-term care needs, including long-term care insurance and Medicaid eligibility and counsels families on financial and legal planning for disabled family members, including special needs trusts to preserve eligibility for governmental benefits.

He is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the New Orleans and Birmingham Estate Planning Council, and the American Bar Association Sections on Taxation, Real Property and Trusts and Estates. In 2013, Mr. Mendler was named to New Orleans Magazine’s ”Top Lawyers of New Orleans” list for his work in Elder Law, and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America (Elder Law, Trusts & Estates, Non-Profit/Charities Law) for over 30 years.  Mr. Mendler also is listed in Alabama Super Lawyers (2008-2013) and was listed in the “Top 100 Lawyers in Estate Planning” in Worth Magazine in 2005.
