Free Legal Assistance to Survivors of Hurricane Isaac Offered by Louisiana State Bar Association, American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division

NEW ORLEANS—Survivors of Hurricane Isaac who need legal advice may take advantage of free legal counseling via a toll-free hotline (1-800-310-7029), part of the overall disaster response and relief plan activated by the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA), in collaboration with the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABA/YLD), the Louisiana Civil Justice Center (LCJC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

John H. Musser IV Installed as 72nd President of the Louisiana State Bar Association

NEW ORLEANS—John H. Musser IV, a sole practitioner with offices in New Orleans and Covington, was installed June 8 as the 72nd president of the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA), in conjunction with the LSBA’s Annual Meeting in Destin, Fla. Administering Musser’s oath of office was Hon. Catherine D. Kimball, chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Receives Inaugural Award

NEW ORLEANS—Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Catherine D. Kimball is the recipient of the inaugural “Catherine D. Kimball Award for Advancement of the Administration of Justice.” The award was presented to Chief Justice Kimball during the Louisiana State Bar Association’s (LSBA) Installation Luncheon June 8, in conjunction with the LSBA’s Annual Meeting in Destin, Fla. The award will be presented annually to an individual who has done exemplary work in advancing the administration of justice in Louisiana.

Law Firms Take On 100 Cases to Relieve Pressure from Orleans Public Defenders Office Budget Deficit

NEW ORLEANS — Officers of the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA) met today with members of the judiciary and public defender system to gain a better understanding of the current financial crisis faced by the Orleans Public Defenders Office (OPD). In recent weeks, budget shortfalls forced OPD management to lay off 27 employees, including 21 attorneys — a third of the public defenders on staff. Also, pay cuts and forced furloughs were ordered for top managers, supervisors and employees.

Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education is Recipient of Sandra Day O'Connor Award

NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education (LCLCE) has been named the 2011 recipient of the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for the Advancement of Civics Education by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). The award honors an organization, court or individual who has promoted, inspired, improved or led an innovation or accomplishment in the field of civics education related to the justice system.
