Law Firms Take On 100 Cases to Relieve Pressure from Orleans Public Defenders Office Budget Deficit
NEW ORLEANS — Officers of the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA) met today with members of the judiciary and public defender system to gain a better understanding of the current financial crisis faced by the Orleans Public Defenders Office (OPD). In recent weeks, budget shortfalls forced OPD management to lay off 27 employees, including 21 attorneys — a third of the public defenders on staff. Also, pay cuts and forced furloughs were ordered for top managers, supervisors and employees. View Release

NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education (LCLCE) has been named the 2011 recipient of the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for the Advancement of Civics Education by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC).
