“Special Ed 101: Student Rights and School Responsibilities.”

On September 24th, the LSBA Children’s Law Committee, Diversity and Outreach Committee, and Legal Services for Persons with Disabilities Committee, co-hosted an event with Southern University Law Center titled “Special Ed 101: Student Rights and School Responsibilities.”

State and federal law recognize the right of children with disabilities to receive a “free appropriate public education” in the form of special education and related services. However, it can be difficult for both parents and educators to determine: when a child’s disability meets eligibility requirements for special education services; what those services (typically in the form of an Individualized Education Program or “IEP”) might consist of; legal complications around disciplining students with disabilities (“procedural safeguards”); and the legal rights and obligations of both students and educators related to the administrative relief processes. “Special Education Law 101” was initially planned as a CLE event only, but was quickly opened to the public as well due to the demand among parents and educators for this information.

Special thank you to panelists Jennifer Coco of Southern Poverty Law Center, Joan Hunt of the Louisiana Department of Education, Laureen Mayfield of the Louisiana Special Education Association, Wayne Stewart of Hammonds, Sills, Adkins & Guice, LLP, and Debra Weinberg of The Advocacy Center.
