President's Message: Code of Professionalism

Dear Friends: A little more than twenty-five years ago the Supreme Court and our State Bar collaborated to create a Code of Professionalism. This one-page Code, although not mandatory, served as an aspirational guide to how we should conduct ourselves in our legal careers as professionally as possible.

With the passage of time I believed it important to ensure that this Code be as current and applicable as possible.  One of my initiatives as President was to undertake this task.  Through the diligent efforts of the Committee on the Profession, an amended and updated Code of Professionalism was proposed.  This was unanimously approved by the Board of Governors and the House of Delegates.  The Supreme Court approved it by formal order.

I am very pleased to present to you the newly updated Code of Professionalism.  While maintaining the basic principles set previously, this Code has now been brought into the 21st Century and addresses issues no one considered twenty-five years ago.  It still embodies the basic tenets of professionalism and maintains a firm basis in our Bar’s motto: “Serving the Public and Serving the Profession.”

I hope that you take a few minutes to read this Code.  I sincerely believe that professionalism is a critical component of being a member of our Bar and this Code furthers that duty.  With kindest regards, I remain,

Sincerely yours,

Barry H. Grodsky
