Heads Up on New Email Scam: Fake Disciplinary Warnings

According to reports by attorneys in several nearby states, an email scam is targeting lawyers with fake disciplinary warnings.

Attorneys have reported receiving an email claiming a grievance had been filed against them and that they had 10 days to respond. The notices purport to be from their state bars. The email invites them to “click here” for more information. When the lawyer clicks on the link to view the complaint, it loads a malicious software called ransomware that blocks computer access until a sum of money is paid.

LSBA members are reminded that the Office of Disciplinary Counsel (ODC) does NOT accept complaints via email. Further, the ODC does NOT notify members of the bar of a complaint via email, but rather by certified mail sent to their bar registration address as per the rules of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

If you receive this type of email, delete it immediately. Similar emails have been reported by lawyers in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, California, Nevada and elsewhere. Read a full ABA Journal article about the scam here.
