Legal Education Assistance Program (LEAP)

Lawyers in Libraries Week:

For the past 11 years, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Louisiana Library Association, the State Library of Louisiana, the Law Library of Louisiana, and local libraries have hosted “Lawyers in Libraries” events during National Celebrate Pro Bono Week. This year's events will be held October 21-26, 2024. During this week, LSBA members and libraries across Louisiana came together to provide free, limited services to the public in-person and virtually.  Check out the Governor's 2023 Proclamation declaring it Pro Bono Week in Louisiana here.

With the hopes of reaching those who are not able to make it to the library in person, the Lawyers in Libraries program also featured two virtual event types. The first, virtual Ask-a-Lawyer consultations--which matched attorneys and patrons by phone--was a pandemic-era innovation that proved to be useful beyond the threat of the virus. The second online option comprised of daily legal presentations livestreamed on Facebook by attorney volunteers, focusing on common legal issues such as tenants’ rights, divorce and custody, estate planning, motor vehicle accidents, and social security disability.

This year, 95 attorneys volunteered at over 134 in-person events across the state, and over 100 patrons were served by phone, and the Facebook webinars reached over 650 viewers.
