Leah Hipple McKay Memorial Awards


Elaine Durbin Abell received the first Leah Hipple McKay Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in 2007 for her years of service to the Lafayette Parish area. She received a BS degree from Louisiana State University and her JD degree from LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. She was admitted to practice in Louisiana in 1969.

Abell is a founding board member and current chair of the Community Foundation of Acadiana, an organization established in 2000 to enhance and promote philanthropy for Lafayette residents. The organization offers donors a way to support worthy charitable causes in the parish while improving the quality of life for Acadiana citizens. She also is a founding board member of the Woman’s Foundation of Acadiana and of Women’s and Children’s Hospital. She served as an Iberia Bank board member and on the 2007 search committee to appoint a new chancellor of LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

She is a member of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association, the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, the Lafayette Parish Bar Auxiliary and the Junior League of Lafayette. She has served on the board of Southwest Louisiana Educational Referral Center since 1980. She has been involved with several governmental organizations, including the Citizens Advisory Committee since 1999, the Lafayette Metropolitan Expressway Commission (vice chair since 2004) and the Acadian Metropolitan Code Authority. In 2006, she was chosen as one of the “Women Who Mean Business” by the Times of Acadiana.
