Board Certified Specialists and 2026 Applicants Under the Age of 65 in 2026 May Earn up to Four (4) Hours of Approved Specialization “Computer-Based CLE” Credits in 2026
The Louisiana Supreme Court amended Rule XXX of the Rules for Continuing Legal Education, modifying the long-standing age-based exemption for attorneys, by Order dated Nov. 10, 2025.
See Nov. 10, 2026 order here. Under the revised Louisiana Supreme Court rule, attorneys who turn 65 on or after Jan. 1, 2026, may earn all of their required CLE through computer-based programming.
Considering the Nov. 10, 2025 order of the Louisiana Supreme Court, the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization (LBLS) approved that all board certified specialists and applicants, who are age 65 or older in 2026, may earn all of their required hours of specialization CLE either in person or online in 2026. For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, there is no longer a limitation on “computer-based CLE” at four (4) hours annually for board certified specialists and applicants, who are age 65 or older in 2026. “Computer-based CLE” includes interactive live webcasts, webinars, and on-demand recordings. The LBLS Board did not change any of the required number of specialization CLE hours for board certified specialists, no matter what their age.
For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization (LBLS) Estate Planning and Administration specialists and Tax Law specialists, who are 65 or older in 2026, may earn all of their required 18 hours of approved specialization CLE either in person or by “computer-based CLE” credits on or before Dec. 31, 2026. For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, LBLS Appellate Practice specialists, Employment Law specialists, Family Law specialists, Health Law specialists, and Labor Law specialists, who are 65 or older in 2026, may earn all of their required 15 hours of approved specialization CLE either in person or by “computer-based CLE” credits on or before Dec. 31, 2026. For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, LBLS Business Bankruptcy Law specialists and Consumer Bankruptcy Law specialists must satisfy the continuing legal education requirements of the American Board of Certification (ABC).
For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, 2026 applicants for LBLS Estate Planning and Administration and Tax Law specializations, who are 65 or older in 2026, may earn all of their required 18 hours of approved specialization CLE either in person or by “computer-based CLE” credits on or before Dec. 31, 2026. For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, 2026 LBLS applicants for Appellate Practice, Employment Law, Family Law, Health Law and Labor Law specializations, who are 65 or older in 2026, may earn all of their required 15 hours of approved specialization CLE either in person or by “computer-based CLE” credits on or before Dec. 31, 2026.
For the 2026 compliance period ending Dec. 31, 2026, board certified specialists and applicants, who are younger than 65 in 2026, are subject to the limitation on “computer-based CLE” at four (4) hours annually (as defined in Rule 3(d) of Louisiana Supreme Court Rule XXX). The remaining required specialization CLE hours are to be “in person attendance.”
