Justice Reinvestment Reforms Practitioners' Guide Now Available

To help criminal law attorneys stay up-to-date on the law changes this past legislative session, the Louisiana Department of  Corrections created a Practitioners’ Guide.

In 2017, the Louisiana Legislature recently passed an ambitious package of Justice Reinvestment laws to reduce the prison population by 10% and save $262 million over the next decade. The laws passed change sentencing guidelines for many non-violent crimes as well as the Habitual Offender Statute. It is critical that attorneys are aware of the changes, particularly the changes to sentencing guidelines. “Louisiana's Justice Reinvestment Reforms Practitioners' Guide” provides an explanation to the changes, including current versus prior law, effective date, and retroactivity.
