West Publishing Corp., doing business as Thomson Reuters Court Management Solutions, provides C-Track case management software to courts across the country. Thomson Reuters announced Sept. 2 that a cyber incident had affected its C-Track environment. The Louisiana Supreme Court uses a customized version of the software for its internal case management system.

According to the court, documents, transcripts and pleadings are not stored within Thomson Reuters’ C-Track environment, which significantly reduces the potential for data exposure. The incident currently appears to involve data stored on Thomson Reuters servers, and there is no evidence that Louisiana’s own C-Track case management system was compromised.

Because Louisiana operates C-Track on premises, the court said it is “extremely unlikely” that personal information belonging to Louisiana residents was exposed. However, names of individuals involved in a small subset of confidential matters could potentially have been visible to those responsible for the incident. The court is cooperating with law enforcement and continuing to monitor the situation.

The incident also serves as a reminder for LSBA members to remain alert for cybercrime, particularly phishing attempts or other messages seeking passwords, financial information or access to accounts. Attorneys should be cautious of unexpected emails containing links or attachments, verify unusual requests through a trusted method of communication and promptly report suspicious activity.
