Children's Law Committee Releases New Trauma-Informed Practice Guide

The LSBA Children’s Law Committee has released a new resource guide, Trauma-Informed Approach: Best Practices for Children’s Attorneys.

The guide provides Louisiana children’s attorneys, including those working in child welfare, delinquency and mental health, with information on best practices and resources for developing a trauma-informed approach and effectively serving their clients.

It begins with concepts and definitions intended to help attorneys understand trauma and how it may affect children across different age groups. It also addresses practical considerations for building a trauma-informed attorney-client relationship, reducing the risk of retraumatization during litigation and recognizing and addressing vicarious trauma in legal practice.

The guide is intended as a practical resource for attorneys representing children in Louisiana and may also be useful to court-connected professionals, law school clinics and others working in related areas.
