A Statement from the Louisiana State Bar Association

The leadership of the Louisiana State Bar Association is deeply troubled about the tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota and the toll it has taken on public trust in our justice system.

This event serves as a painful reminder that for too long, African Americans and other minorities have not received fair enforcement and equal administration of justice.

Key elements of the LSBA’s mission are to ensure access to and aid in the administration of justice, and to increase public understanding of and respect for the law. We recognize there is much work to be done and will look for guidance from these principles and the oath we took when admitted to the Bar.

As lawyers, we are problem-solvers, critical thinkers and community servants. Our voices will be needed in the days and weeks ahead as our state and nation address these long-standing issues. We support Louisiana lawyers and stand with you against inequities in the criminal justice system, racism and discrimination.

We are committed to the principle of equal justice for all and will ask everyone to join in reflection, conversation and peaceful action to make a positive difference in Louisiana.
