9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Presented by the LSBA Children's Law Committee and Legal Services for Persons with Disabilities Committee

Hosted by the Southern University Law Center

Southern University Law Center • 2 Roosevelt Steptoe Dr,  Room 130 • Baton Rouge, LA

3.5 CLE credit hours for attorneys. Presented in-person only. Free and open to the public.

State and federal law recognize the right of children with disabilities to receive a "free appropriate public education" in the form of special education and related services. However, it can be difficult for both parents and educators to determine: when a child's disability meets eligibility requirements for special education services; what those services (typically in the form of an Individualized Education Program or "IEP") might consist of; and the legal rights and obligations of both students and educators related to the administrative relief processes.

This Special Education Workshop will provide both the public and Bar members with an overview of the laws and procedures relevant to special education. Topics covered during the session will include special education rights and administrative process, discipline, accessing mental health services, and dispute resolution. The CLE will be presented in a panel format and members of the panel will be available for questions and discussion at the end.
