Crystal Gavel Awards

Dana M. Douglas is a shareholder in the New Orleans office of Liskow & Lewis. She was selected to receive a 2013-14 Crystal Gavel Award for her outstanding work and efforts in assisting Exodus House and other groups on a volunteer basis.

Ms. Douglas has been instrumental in the success and viability of the Exodus Place Community Center. She currently sits on the board of directors for the center, which focuses on the needs of at-risk youth and young adults in Central City New Orleans. To date, Exodus Place has provided vocational training, job placement, affordable housing and pairing with resources in other areas such as literacy and early childhood education as well as provided recreational activities for neighborhood kids. Ms. Douglas has given her time, her money, and other resources to help ensure the young organization survives and succeeds. Recently, Ms. Douglas was instrumental in coordinating a legal fair at the community center to address the needs of residents in the areas of blight, succession, family law, and criminal law. Exodus Place is about providing solutions to the specific needs of the community and residents, and Ms. Douglas is a prominent and active part of the Center.

She was a member of the Louisiana State Law Institute, a volunteer judge for the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court Teen Court Program, and a board member for the New Orleans Children's Bureau. She also served as a board member for St. Andrew’s Village which will be a faith-based mixed-use village community where both adults with developmental disabilities and non-disabled individuals can live, work, worship and socialize throughout their lifelong journey.

Although Ms. Douglas has been involved in many areas of her community, one of her most rewarding endeavors is more personal. In 2008, she became the guardian to her minor cousin, Janee, who by age 15 had lost her mother and grandparents who had previously served as her guardians. Ms. Douglas supported and guided Janee - financially, as a guardian and in many other ways. Janee now attends Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, where she is on full scholarship.

“Dana quietly but continuously serves her community and its citizens,” said Candice McMillian, owner of Exodus Place. “Dana…will never ‘toot her own horn,’ but her good works speak for themselves. I think she exemplifies the traits recognized by the Crystal Gavel Award.”

Ms. Douglas earned her law degree from the Loyola University of New Orleans College of Law.
