Jeffrey K. Coreil is an associate at NeunerPate, a civil defense based firm in Lafayette. Mr. Coreil was selected to receive a 2013-14 Crystal Gavel Award for his commitment and dedication to providing pro bono legal services in his community and promoting professionalism within the local bar.

Mr. Coreil is actively involved in the primary pro bono programs facilitated by Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers (LVL), including the H.E.L.P. for the Homeless Program and the Protective Order Panel. Heaccepted three LVL pro bono cases in 2011 and two pro bono cases in 2012, assisting low income families with a variety of domestic and family law cases. In addition, he is a very active member of the LVL Protective Order Panel and assisted 11 domestic violence victims with Title 46 protective order petitions in 2011 and 17 domestic violence victims in 2012.

Mr. Coreil likewise takes an active role in H.E.L.P., a program which coordinates the efforts of volunteer attorneys with members of the Lafayette Bar Association staff to assist homeless individuals in obtaining certified copies of their birth certificates. Many of these individuals are otherwise without documents to prove their identity. In 2011, Mr. Coreil assisted six H.E.L.P. participants in obtaining these much-needed documents. In all, since beginning his practice just four years ago, Mr. Coreil has contributed over 275 hours of legal work to the impoverished citizens of Lafayette. He is one of NeunerPate’s most active LVL participants.

In 2011 and 2012, Mr. Coreil volunteered to be a guest speaker at the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Professionalism Orientation program at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. As a volunteer, he spoke to incoming ILs regarding the importance of maintaining ethics and professionalism in practice.

In 2011, Mr. Coreil became the Chair of the LYLA Social Committee which organizes social events for members of the judiciary, the Lafayette Bar, and LYLA. His goal as Social Chair has been to coordinate events which allow old and new members of the bar to comfortably gather and develop cordial professional relationships. Through Mr. Coreil’s leadership, the LYLA Social Committee hosted very successful events in the fall of 2011 and spring and summer of 2012.

Mr. Coreil currently serves as the Chair of LYLA’s newly created CLE committee which provides local CLE opportunities for the area’s young lawyers. His goal is to organize inexpensive, educational events with speakers and topics which focus on the challenges faced by newer member of the bar as well as to encourage cordial relationships amongst the area’s new, young attorneys.

“Motivated by generosity and compassion and leading by example, Jeffrey challenges his colleagues to donate their time and expertise to help those in need in the Lafayette area,” said Susan Holliday, a past Executive Director of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association. “Jeffrey is a tremendous example to his colleagues, both new and established, that, although it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of practice, it is important to remember that we, as attorneys, have the skills and resources to help those in need.”

Mr. Coreil earned his law degree from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center.
