Attorney Volunteers Needed to Judge State High School Mock Trial Competition

Attorneys interested in serving as a presiding judge, timekeeper or scoring judge for the 2019 Richard N. Ware IV State High School Mock Trial Competition in Lafayette should email Competition Co-Chair Megan E. Réaux at mreaux@hillandbeyer.com by March 27.

The competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 30, at the John M. Shaw U.S. Courthouse, Ste. 2100, 800 Lafayette St., Lafayette.

Competition organizers are seeking presiding judges, timekeepers and scoring judges for Rounds 1 and 2 (20 volunteers minimum per round). Also needed are at least five judges for the final round. Attorneys can volunteer for the whole day or for one or two rounds.

The courthouse opens at 7:30 a.m., with event registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. The first round begins at 8:15 a.m.; the second round begins at 10:30 a.m.; and the final round begins at 1:45 p.m. Volunteers are asked to arrive 15 minutes before each round begins.

The state competition is the culmination of four regional championships coordinated annually by the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. Teams competing at the state competition include Haynes Academy, Jesuit High School, Caddo Magnet, West Monroe High School, Zachary High School, West Feliciana High School and Early College Academy (two teams).

The competition is named in memory of Hon. Richard N. Ware IV who enthusiastically volunteered for nearly a decade as the presiding judge of the final round of the Louisiana High School Mock Trial Competition.

This year’s state case, Blake Carver v. Theta Lambda Pi Fraternity, Inc., was written by the members of the University of Louisiana-Monroe Mock Trial Team.

Questions and comments may be emailed to Competition Co-Chairs James E. Courtenay at jimmy@kinginjuryfirm.com and Megan E. Réaux at mreaux@hillandbeyer.com.
