Transition Into Practice (TIP) Mentoring

Congratulations on your graduation and admission to the Bar Association!

As a Qualified Candidate, part of your additional requirements for admission to the Bar will be for you to participate in The Transition Into Practice (TIP) Mentoring program. This program, created in 2015, has been very successful. It offers unique and practical advice as you enter into the practice of law, most of which is not taught in law school. The LSBA believes that you are very fortunate to have the opportunity to go through this program.

You have received forms to register both you and a mentor (if applicable.) The forms are also linked below. Once we have received your forms, you will be enrolled in the program, and paired with a mentor. Your program commences on the date of the pairing. Please be patient as we work our way through the large number of pairings.

All the requirements and guidelines for the program can be found in the TIP Handbook. You must complete the program on or before December 31, 2021. If you do not successfully complete the program by December 31, 2021, pursuant to the Supreme Court Order, you will be immediately ruled ineligible to continue to practice.

For more infomation regarding the program please see the TIP FAQ.

Mandatory Mentors

Mentor Qualifications

The Supreme Court will appoint qualifying mentors recommended by the LSBA based on submitted mentor applications. To qualify for appointment, the mentor:
  • must have been admitted into the practice of law for a period of at least ten years;
  • must have no record of suspension or disbarment from practice;
  • must have a professional liability insurance policy with minimum limits of $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 in the aggregate; and
  • must be of good moral character, willing to voluntarily participate in the program, and commit throughout its term to the obligations and duties of being a mentor.

The professional liability insurance policy requirement is not applicable to mentors who are employed as in-house attorneys or employed by a governmental unit or “not for profit” entity.

Judges may serve as mentors.

Mentor Registration

Since the program was first implemented in 2015, numerous mentor and mentee pairings have successfully occurred across the state. The mentor program not only gives new lawyers a great opportunity to learn practical experience from seasoned lawyers, but it also gives experienced Bar members a chance to give back, and to guide new lawyers in the right direction. A mentor will get 6.0 hours of CLE: 2.0 hours for a Mentor Training CLE and 4.0 hours upon the mentee’s completion of the program.

One of the main goals of the mentoring program is not only to impart the wisdom, character and experience of the older lawyers to younger attorneys, but to foster friendships and collegiality. Please consider volunteering to become a Mentor!
