ATJ Commission Committees


The mission of the ATJ Commission Building Bridges Committee is to help connect, develop, and support the crucial ties between the civil and criminal legal aid communities in order to assist Louisiana’s most vulnerable citizens and strengthen the state’s justice community.

The mission of the ATJ Commission Funding Committee is to promote funding options and increase funding of Louisiana civil legal aid organizations.

The mission of the ATJ Commission Language Access Committee is to further educate the Commission regarding current activities and thoughts on how the Commission might further support work on language access to the courts.

The Language Access Committee completed two studies; one from the view of interpreters, and the second focused on attorneys’ understanding of their duty to communicate limited-English proficient (LEP) clients in order to competently advise and to engage an interpreter to facilitate good communication when necessary.

One result of these reports is the development of an attorney reference card, providing information and tips to attorneys engaging an interpreter.

The mission of the Modest Means Committee is to develop ways to address the lack of access to affordable legal services available to modest means clients – clients who do not qualify for free legal services from non-profit civil legal service programs, but are unable to afford the average market rate for legal representation.

The Access to Justice Commission Self-Represented Litigants Committee was established to address the civil legal needs of self-represented litigants (SRLs) who are unable to obtain counsel, and to assist courts and ATJ partners to serve the public more effectively.

The Access to Justice Commission Technology Committee was established to explore and recommend technological solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of legal services delivery and the justice system.
