Program Overview

LIFT is a statewide Legal Incubator and Accelerator Program focused on addressing the lack of legal services available to those unable to obtain free legal aid due to income requirements, but cannot afford market rate legal services. To address this issue, LIFT supports new attorneys, develop viable and sustainable, law practices over an 18-month period that address the legal needs of modest means clients. The LIFT participants receive free resources, mentoring, legal technology tools, practice management and substantive law training, networking and referral opportunities. Overall, the purpose of the LIFT Fellowship Program is to:

  • Innovate. Assist the attorneys develop new and innovative ways to provide affordable legal services to low and moderate income individuals
  • Collaborate. Foster collaboration among public interest-oriented attorneys by providing resources, training, and mentorship to ensure their solo practices can sustainably serve modest means clients
  • Serve. Expand access to affordable legal services for low and moderate income people statewide
 


The Accelerator Program is offered statewide and provides participants with a number of tools designed to “accelerate” their practice, including, but not limited to, free resources, legal and practice management training, collaboration and mentoring, and networking events.

Through a collaboration with the New Orleans Family Justice Center and Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, LIFT Fellows receive office space and work with attorneys in family and domestic violence law to increase access to legal presentation to survivors.

In partnership with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, Southern University Law Center, Louisiana State University Law School, and the American Bar Association Center for Innovation, LIFT Fellows receive support to provide legal services in successions, heirship property, and title clearing to people affected by the 2016 Baton Rouge Flooding.

LIFT, in collaboration with the New Orleans Pro Bono Project, provides support and mentorship to LIFT Fellows practicing immigration law and specifically providing legal services in bond proceedings to people detained in Central Louisiana.

The Justice and Accountability Center of Louisiana (JAC) works with LIFT, in support of its collaborative lawyering initiative, to address legal barriers individuals face after incarceration, including expungement services and civil legal needs of participants in the Re-Entry Court programs.
